IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Finding the right therapist for your child is an important decision. If you decide not to work with me, I strongly encourage you to ensure that any therapist you choose is appropriately trained, fully insured, and working within a recognised ethical framework.
Choosing the Right Therapist for Your Child
Look for Accredited Training

“Play therapy” is not currently a protected title in the UK. Unfortunately, this means that some practitioners may describe themselves as play therapists after completing only short courses or limited training.
A qualified play therapist should have completed substantial, clinically supervised postgraduate-level training with a recognised professional body such as:
-
Play Therapy UK (PTUK)
-
British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP)
Accreditation with a recognised organisation helps ensure the therapist has met rigorous standards of training, clinical supervision, and ongoing professional development.

Check Professional Membership & Registration

A reputable therapist should:
-
Be registered or accredited with a recognised professional body
-
Be bound by a published ethical framework
-
Undertake regular clinical supervision
-
Complete ongoing Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
You can usually verify membership through the professional body’s online register.

Ensure They Are Fully Insured

Therapists working with children should hold:
-
Professional indemnity insurance
-
Public liability insurance
-
An enhanced DBS check
You are entitled to ask for confirmation of this.

Ask About Safeguarding & Ethics

A safe practitioner should:
-
Have up-to-date safeguarding training
-
Follow clear confidentiality and data protection policies
-
Have transparent procedures for handling concerns or complaints
Ethical therapists will welcome these questions.

Choosing a therapist is about trust, safety, and competence. It is entirely appropriate for you to ask about qualifications, accreditation, supervision, and experience. A well-trained therapist will respect and support your right to make an informed decision.
If you would like to know more about my own qualifications and professional memberships please ask during our initial consultation.
